Undergraduate Research

Engaging in research promotes intellectual growth and can help prepare you for post-undergraduate study or a profession. Honors students have numerous ways to engage in academic research and can begin as early as their freshman year.  Students can be paid for their research through an Honors College research grant, or participate in research by enrolling in an SCHC independent research course or a research course through their majorUSC’s Office of Undergraduate Research also provides research funding opportunities.

Honors Beyond the Classroom Through Research

Students may fulfill the Honors BTC requirement through the successful completion of an approved independent research course.  A student must receive course credit from an approved research course in order to fulfill the Honors BTC requirement.

To fulfill the Honors BTC requirement through research:

  • The research course must be approved by the Honors College, appear on the USC transcript and be credit-bearing.
  • Although a student may enroll in a 1 credit hour approved research course, the student must successfully complete a total of 3 credit hours of Honors BTC to fulfill the requirement.

Students should talk to their Honors advisor and professors to learn about current faculty-led research opportunities or check out our full list of current research opportunities.

Independent Research Courses through your Major

Another way to fulfill the Honors Beyond the Classroom requirement with research is to enroll in a departmental independent research course through your major department. These courses involve working with a faculty member addressing various research questions. Students should talk to their major advisor to see if their major offers a departmental independent research course.

Visit the BTC through your Major database to see a list of departmental independent research courses that have been approved to count for either Beyond the Classroom or Honors elective credit.

Honors College and the Office of Undergraduate Research Grants

While valuable experiences, neither the Honors College research grant nor the Magellan Scholar award are eligible for academic credit, and therefore will not fulfill the Honors College BTC requirement.
