Josh Powell
Title: | Assistant Softball Coach |
USC Sumter |
Coach Powell, a native of Kingstree, South Carolina, has dedicated much of his life
to the game of softball and the development of young athletes. He attended Williamsburg
Academy in Kingstree, where his passion for the sport first took root. During his
youth, Powell played Little League baseball and went on to become a standout high
school player with aspirations of competing at the collegiate level. He was on track
to play baseball for The Citadel, but the unexpected loss of his mother led him to
step away from the sport he loved and focus on his family.
Although his playing career ended sooner than anticipated, Powell’s connection to
the game never faded. Years later, as his own children began playing youth sports,
he returned to the diamond as a volunteer with his oldest daughter’s Little League
teams. This experience reignited his passion for coaching and mentoring young athletes.
Powell went on to coach a showcase team under the Fellowship of Christian Athletes
(FCA) organization, where he gained experience working with talented student-athletes
preparing for the next level of competition. He also helped form and coach a local
travel team, where he focused on player development and preparing athletes for showcase
and travel ball. His reputation for teaching fundamentals, instilling confidence,
and emphasizing character development has earned him respect throughout the youth
softball and baseball communities.
Currently, Powell serves as a volunteer coach for the Carolina Elite organization
under Tim Drotar. Here at USC Sumter, he is in his second full year with the softball
program, specializing in hitting instruction and defensive development. His hands-on
approach, technical knowledge, and ability to connect with players make him an invaluable
member of the coaching staff.
Off the field, Coach Powell is a devoted husband and father. He is married to his
wife, Cary, and together they have five daughters—Sophie, Bellamy, Morgan, Bailey,
and Tilly—who inspire his commitment to mentorship and family values.
Coach Powell’s journey from player to coach reflects his belief that sports can teach
lifelong lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and character. Whether working with
Little Leaguers or collegiate athletes, he brings the same passion, dedication, and
care to every team he serves.
