Faculty Director for Global Fellows Living-Learning Community

The University of South Carolina announces the search for the Faculty Director for Global Fellows LLC. This position is expected to be filled by a full-time tenured professor at the rank of Associate or Full at the USC Columbia campus with an official start date of May 15, 2025. The position reports to both the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies and the Associate Vice President for the Residential Experience and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. 

Global Fellows LLC

The Global Fellows LLC is housed in South Quad residence hall and serves approximately 150 residential students. Students from all majors are invited to join the Global Fellows LLC. All Faculty-Led LLCs work toward the following 4 goals:

  1. Support academic attainment
  2. Foster students’ sense of belonging
  3. Connect students to the Faculty Director and the LLC staff
  4. Cultivate student engagement of High Impact Practices

Role and Responsibilities of the Faculty Director

The Faculty Director for the Global Fellows LLC will lead programs focused on supporting the success of Global Fellows students in their transition to becoming a successful member of the USC community. They will have the administrative and programmatic support of the staff of a Program Lead, a graduate assistant, and student staff. Additionally, collaboration with the Residence Life staff, including a Residence Life Coordinator and Resident Assistants, is expected. The Faculty Director is encouraged to recruit faculty, staff, and community volunteers to enhance the LLC. The community’s purpose is to enhance, both academically and experientially, the university experience of its residents. 

The Faculty Director provides the leadership and vision for the living-learning community and is expected to: act as the community’s chief academic administrator; promote intellectual exchange, leadership development, and experiential learning; support student engagement and success; encourage interaction between faculty and students; interact with the Executive Director of Housing in conjunction with the AVP for the Residential Experience; and regularly meet with the Office of the Provost and other university officials. In addition, the Faculty Director plays an important role in recruitment activities such as participating in open houses and Admitted Students Days, meeting with prospective students and their parents, etc. and engaging with LLC students during summer orientation. The community also supports peer mentoring, with continuing students guiding peers on course selection, internships, research, and student organizations. Residents will be supported by leadership development activities, community building events, language tables, and regular direct engagement with the Faculty Director.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated: 

  • an undergraduate teaching record of excellence and practical experience in working with students
  • an interest in undergraduate students
  • a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and mentoring
  • international expertise
  • foreign language expertise (preferred)
  • an appreciation of students from different backgrounds and interests
  • administrative, organizational and supervisory skills, as this position will supervise full-time staff.

Additional Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities of the Faculty Director include (but are not limited to): 

  • Interacting with undergraduate Global Fellows students (mostly in their first year) on a daily basis
  • Attending or leading events including periodic evening and/or weekend hours
  • Providing fiscal oversight of the LLC
  • Staffing Admission events to recruit Global Fellows participants
  • Supervising staff
  • Connecting students to campus resources (i.e., Education Abroad, Undergraduate Research, Counseling and Psychiatry, Student Success Center, student organizations, academic advising, career center, etc.)
  • Encouraging students to participate in academic support opportunities including on-site supplemental instruction and tutoring for key coursework.

Appointment and Compensation

The Faculty Director for Global Fellows LLC is a half-time (20 hours per week) position with a three-year appointment subject to renewal upon agreement of all parties. As compensation, the Faculty Director will receive an appropriate salary supplement and release from certain teaching duties. Compensation will be negotiated with the Provost.
