International Students

Applicants who have completed or are in the process of completing an undergraduate or graduate degree at institutions outside of the United States are required to submit official academic records (transcripts, proof of degree) and an academic credential evaluation to complete their admissions process.

The University of South Carolina Graduate School requires that applicants submitting academic credentials from institutions outside of the U.S. must have their credentials evaluated for equivalency to U.S. accredited coursework on a course-by-course basis by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). A list of NACES members can be found at this website: Members – NACES. Transcripts can be sent from approved NACES-accredited transcript delivery services (e.g. WES ICAP, Educational Perspectives, Digitary by Parchment, etc.).

Evaluations are a required component since they determine how your academics are graded compared to the U.S. education system.

If you provided an evaluation reflecting in-progress study, a follow-up course-by-course evaluation showing the complete academic record and degree conferral could be required. Applicants are responsible for paying all fees for such evaluations, upgrades, as well as making arrangements with a NACES accredited agency to send and receive their documents.

If you are Recommended for Admission to the Graduate School, and have not submitted credential evaluation(s), you will not be officially admitted until it is received. All admitted students with international credentials must have a NACES accredited transcript evaluation submitted to be eligible to enroll in courses.

FAQs

Do I need to submit a transcript evaluation before a decision can be made?

Credentials should preferably be submitted at the point of application. If they are not submitted at the time of application, you may be eligible for pending admission, but will not be officially admitted until the evaluation, transcript(s), and proof of degree(s) are received. Student will be notified of “pending admission”. Please allow plenty of time for your documents to be evaluated by the NACES accredited agency. Detailed information can be found on the Official Transcript page.

What is the requirement for transcripts?

Official transcripts include both grade sheets and final degree certificates (not provisional certificates). Applicants submitting international academic credentials must have their credentials evaluated for equivalency to U.S. accredited coursework on a course-by-course basis by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). The course-by-course evaluation, transcript(s), and proof of degree(s) should preferably be submitted at the point of application. If they are not submitted at the time of application, the student may be eligible for pending admission, but will not be officially admitted until the evaluation, transcript(s), and proof of degree(s) are received. Student will be notified of “pending admission”. Please allow plenty of time for your documents to be evaluated by the NACES accredited agency.

If you have also attended a university in the United States, information on submitting transcripts is included on the Official transcript page.

Who is an approved Evaluation Service provider?

The NACES Member Agencies which offer to provide transcripts and proof of degree documentation as supporting materials with their course-by-course evaluations are:
  • WES (World Education Services): provide transcripts when using WES-ICAP
  • ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators):provide transcripts when using ECE Dispatch
  • Educational Perspectives: provides transcripts when sent electronically
  • Josef Silny & Associates
  • SpanTran (The Evaluation Company)
  • EE (International Education Evaluations)

You can attach unofficial transcripts to your online application for the review process. Transcripts are required from every institution attended for course credit, even if a degree was not awarded.
