Bio

Background: Shanna Williams is a Clinical Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences and a founding faculty member at USCSOMG. She earned a Master's Degree and Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from the University of Florida. Prior to joining USCSOMG, Dr. Williams was a member of the teaching faculty at the University of Florida Medical School. She currently serves as Director of the Anatomy Laboratory and manages the Greenville Health System’s Willed Body Program. Dr. Williams’ teaching experiences include anatomy and histology courses to Physician Assistants, dental students, and medical schools. She is a two-time recipient of the M1 Teacher of the Year award. Dr. Williams also received the 1st Outstanding Biomedical Sciences Teacher Award from the Charter Class of 2016 and was chosen as the Convocation Speaker by Class of 2017. Her research interests include the interface between anatomical imaging and clinical practices and medical education topics such as gendered differences in academic performance and strategies for student success. In addition to her medical school responsibilities, Dr. Williams is a trained forensic anthropologist and a Member of the American Academy of Forensics Sciences. She serves as the forensic anthropology consultant for three counties in the Upstate of South Carolina.
Research Interest(s): My research interests are orientated around skeletal biology, the forensic sciences, anatomical aspects of clinical diagnosis, and the clinical application of stem cells. These investigations have explored age-related changes in human craniofacial morphology, the geometric morphometric usage of cranial landmarks, and healing cells within organs. Currently, my research focuses on the anatomical basis of lesions and pain patterns encountered in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Secondarily, I am interested in the assessment and curricular design of the anatomical sciences in medical education.
