John F. Emerson, MD

Dr.  Emerson is a native Floridian and graduate of Florida Southern College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in biology, and competed as a collegiate athlete in cross country, track and field, and swimming. He attended medical school at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine where he received his medical degree and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism honor societies. Dr. Emerson completed residency training in Family Medicine and a Faculty Development and Research Fellowship at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC. 

Dr. Emerson is board-certified in Family Medicine and an associate professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. He provides patient care at the Center for Family Medicine Greenville where he also teachers and mentors learners across the educational continuum. 

Since joining Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, he has served as Director of the Family Medicine Clerkship, Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, and Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs within the Department of Family Medicine. He has been recognized for excellence in teaching through numerous honors, including the Golden Peach Award for excellence in M3 education, the Leonard Tow Humanism award, the Halford Award for Humane Education, and the Medical Student Excellence in Teaching Award.  These accomplishments reflect his commitment to excellence in education. 

As Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, Dr. Emerson provides strategic oversight for medical student education programs, advances curricular innovation, and fosters a supportive and inclusive learning environment. He brings a strong record of leadership in academic medicine, with extensive experience in undergraduate and graduate medical education, program development, accreditation, and faculty advancement.
