Graduate Staff Assistant (GSA) positions are available for the Fall 2024 semester

Duties

As directed by the Operations Manager, the graduate assistant (GA) will assist in setting up manikins, equipment, and supplies for various skills labs and simulation events.  When the labs or simulation events are concluded the GA will break down the stations, clean the equipment as needed, and report any equipment malfunction or deterioration to the Operations Manager.  The GA will also be responsible for understanding how the lab's A/V equipment and patient simulators are turned on and off and how to appropriately use the equipment.  Other duties by the GA include but are not limited to stocking supplies, managing the flow of simulation activities, making sure the lab is kept neat (beds made, trash picked up or recycled), updating, organizing, and printing data files related to scenarios, and role-playing in scenarios. 

Time Commitment 

10 or 20 hours per week, varies by faculty member. Some individual hours are set based on the faculty member’s teaching schedule – commonly Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays. Rest of weekly hours are flexible based on the GIA’s schedule. Period of employment matches the academic calendar. GIA will need to be available through the end of each semester’s exam period.  This position is located in the College of Nursing’s Clinical Education Building in West Columbia, a 15-minute drive from our downtown campus.

Qualifications

Must have already attended or be able to attend the required GTA/GIA Workshops hosted by the Center for Teaching Excellence and register for GRAD 701, a seminar course of professional development. These are one-time required trainings for various types of assistantship position. Information is available on the Center for Teaching Excellence website

Benefits

This position will qualify the GIA for in-state tuition.

Presidential Management Fellows ProgramDue September 18 

The Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF) is the federal government’s flagship leadership development program and provides two-year full-time paid fellowships for recipients at a federal agency.

The application will open on September 4 and closes on September 18. Applicants complete two online assessments and submit resumes, transcripts, and supporting documents.

Graduate students in all programs who are interested in a career in any part of the federal government should consider applying.

University 101 is accepting applications for new instructors for fall 2024. Prospective instructors should submit the new instructor application, along with a cover letter and resume. 

Requirements
  • master's degree or higher from an accredited institution (official transcript required)
  • status as a full-time university employee, retiree of USC Columbia, or Ph.D. student
  • completion of the Teaching Experience Workshop
  • approval by the instructor's supervisor or department chair
  • approval by the director of University 101 Programs
  • participate in regular professional development opportunities offered by University 101 Programs
